To slip into the darkness and

feel its cold embrace as the

chill night caresses the colour

from your pallid, tear-stained face.

Inhale the icy air as you drift

and feel it tenderly beseeching,

its icy tendrils reaching deep

into the depths of your soul,

searching for the fragile life

that you hold within your tired,

tortured self like a flickering flame

growing dim upon an old dusty shelf.

And the life that you once knew,

says farewell and then goodbye.

That cold harsh reality;

questions fading with your eyes.

How can you just let go of those

you’ve loved throughout your life;

that you’ve nurtured and nursed

through life’s troubles and strife.

Just watch them slip like silken sand

free of your frantic fingers until

naught but a wisp of memory,

is sadly all that lingers.
